Seven Tools:
The Economy: World Economic Outlook is a database from the International Monetary Fund that allows journalists to compare economic outlook by country and year based on the IMF April, 2010 report.
Public Safety/Maps: This is a cool site I learned about from Al Tompkins at Poynter: Global Map of Natural Disasters is a mashup that helps you discover disasters around the globe.
College Crime Statistics: Campus Safety and Security Data Analysis Cutting Tool analyze college campus crime statistics with this resource from the Office of Postsecondary Education, part of the U.S. Department of Education.
Politics: Here's a gem from Marylaine Block of Neat New Stuff on the Net: Sunlight Foundation: Influence Explorer lets you type in the names of lawmakers, corporations, or individuals here to find out who is providing the most funding for your congressional candidates.
Social Media Guidelines for Journalists: The Radio TV Digital News Association has released its Social Media Guidelines for journalists.
Politics: The National Institute on Money in State Politics, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization revealing the influence of campaign money on state-level elections and public policy in all 50 states, has a comprehensive and verifiable campaign-finance database available for free on its site.
Copy Editing Resources: It's not the fanciest site on the Web, but DrGrammar.org has a great quick-reference page. Crash Blossoms: Headlines Gone Wrong is a great site that highlights awful headlines and implied meanings. A must-bookmark for copy editors and teachers. Another helpful tool: Thsrs, the shorter thesaurus, which produces shorter synonyms for any word you type in. It's a very helpful tool for writing short, tight headlines.
Ethics: The Center for Journalism Ethics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has released a report on the ethics of nonprofit journalism. The report is a collaboration of three centers: the UW ethics center, the Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism and the Knight Chair in Investigative & Enterprise Reporting at the University of Illinois. Related Resources: Toolbox Ethics Page.
