Enforcement of the no fly zone in Libya signals the continual presence of American forces and their bombardment over Tripoli in an attempt to single out leader Moammar Gadhaf. Earlier this week on Monday, U.S. President Barack Obama mentioned repeatedly to the press that the coalition air campaign over Libya is not aimed at removing Gadhafi from power, despite American policy assertions that the Libyan ruler "has to go." Speaking to reporters during a visit to Chile, President Obama insisted the purpose of the military mission is in response to the humanitarian threat Gadhafi poses to his people. "There are a whole range of policies that we are putting in place that have created one of the most powerful international consensuses around the isolation of Mr. Gadhafi and we will continue to pursue those," Obama said. According to President Obama the main premise of American involvement is due to humanitarian efforts that were mandated by NATO in 1973. Then lead coordinator in this event, Gen. Carter Ham said the coalition fired 12 more cruise missiles Monday at Libyan missile, command and air defense sites and, although is stated not to be a target himself, the compound Gadhafi has been occupying was blasted with tomahawk missiles given the surface to air missile bastions that are positioned within the compound. Meanwhile, anti-government rebels tried to reclaim key Libyan cities Monday after international forces launched fresh airstrikes overnight. Rebels said they were trying to reclaim the city of Ajdabiya, which had been surrounded by government troops before the international campaign began.

After having taken pills, drank alcohol and smoked marijuana Kimber thought she could start a fire by falling asleep with a cigarette in her hands, according to court documents. When the fire didn’t happen she lit paper, couch and love seat pillows to start the fire. After the fire had been ignited, Kimber realized she had made a mistake and ran to the neighbors to get help. Shantel Darrah Arbiter Online- “Photos of U.S. Soldiers posing, smiling with killed Afghans surface; Boisean Involved.”
A German newspaper published a photo of American Soldiers posing with dead, bloodied Afghan bodies. Two of the soldiers, that were easily identified, held up one of bodies by the mans’ hair like he was a trophy. One of the soldiers in the photo is Andrew Holmes from Boise. This photo is included in the murder-conspiracy trial, that Holmes and four other soldiers are being tried in.
The article gives two links to USA Today and BBC for more information but I also looked up the pictures from the German paper Der Spiegal where the horrific pictures are shown.
It’s hard to see articles like these published because it’s an act that looks bad on every American. What’s even worse is that pictures and actions like these counteract everything we’ve done over in the middle east. Its also disgusting to see someone have such little respect for the a dead body, no matter who it is, or was. Nobody in their right mind should want to pose and smile next to a dead body as if they had just gone hunting.
This article is good for the information it was given but I think it could have gone more in depth to the charges the soldiers are facing. The soldiers are being charged with desecration of corpses, illegal possession of photos of corpses, drug abuse and acts of bodily injury against comrades. Also it could have named the other soldiers in the pictures other than the soldier from Boise so that it didn't look as if Boise was the only one to blame or at fault.

The Broncos season ended last night in Eugene to the Oregon Ducks.
Coach Leon Rice has said from the beginning that this year’s team was the team that never gave up. And that is just what the Broncos did. Last night the Broncos could not buy a shot, shooting only 36 percent from the field. The Ducks were on fire as they shot 50 percent from the field for both halves. The Broncos got down in the first have by 9 points. The second half the Ducks came out hot extending their lead to 20 points.
That’s where the Broncos didn’t give up. They rallied back to get within 6 points with a minute sixteen left in the game. Coach Rice saw that the Broncos had been getting beat in the front line so he subbed out the big guys and went small. The scrappy and aggressive play from his guards is what helped pull the Broncos back within 6. Coach Rice said that everyone on the roster this year has contributed in some way or another and that is why they have gone so far.
Reggie Arnold led the Broncos last night scoring 24 points. Arnold said he was proud of his teammates. They never gave up and kept fighting.
Rice said that his first year couldn’t of gone any better. Having the 7 seniors he had and how hard they worked every day, really allowed them to get to where they are.
Police: Boise couple charged with felony injury to child over poor living conditions By: Idaho Statesman Staff
This Story is about a man who is being charged with felony injured to a child because they were living poor living conditions. Fred Lindau and Crystal Lindau were arrested Wednesday and booked on felony charges; injury to child. Boise police say the couple allowed their children to live in dirty and disgusting conditions at their home located on the Boise bench. The Boise police told media that the children were under the age of five. They took the children away from the parents and placed them in custody of the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare. The police did not know if the kids were in state custody, but they did say that court records from Ada County said that the state is looking from some support from foster care parents. Boise police were called to scene on January 12th of this year and that’s when they took the children. The parents were only recently charged with a felony. Once the officers went inside they saw rotten food everywhere and human feces scattered around the residence. Ada County prosecutors just recently put out arrest warrants for the parents and then they were arrested on Wednesday evening. The parents could be sentenced for up to 10 years in prison if found guilty. Stories like this really upset me. I just don’t understand how people could let their children be put through this kind of stuff. People like that need to spend a lot of time in jail for their actions because that is not okay. Jacy Skeen Tu/Th http://www.dw-world.de/dw/article/0,,14935460,00.html Cycling initiatives in Copenhagen go the distance
With Copenhagen being deemed the bicycling capital of the world, 37 percent of the population there uses a bike to get to work or school. And they are hoping to have 50 percent on the pedals by 2015. However with all of those bikes, there are problems or congestion and spots to park them. To give you a perspective on the amount of bikes, the busiest bicycling street in the world, Norrebrogade in Copenhagen, ushers through 37,000 cyclists per day! The article talks about the innovations that Mike Harris has come up with. The biggest being the “Cycle Super Highways”, implemented by 18 municipalities surrounding the capital. These highways are bike tracks that run parallel to automobile highways; they have bridges to go over roads and the harbor, but the main idea is to encourage travelers to pedal the extra distance. They have the most direct routes with no detours, and there are also service stations with air pumps and other tools available. Another way that Copenhagen is benefiting from the popularity of biking is they have found a way, at the green-friendly hotel Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers, where the guests are welcomed to produce electricity through ordinary bikes connected to small generators and batteries. That electricity is then used to “fuel” computers, televisions, light bulbs, or fed directly into the grid of the hotel.
Police: Boise couple charged with felony injury to child over poor living conditions
This story from the Idaho Statesman was well written and informative. It discusses the findings of two children under the age of five who were found living in “filthy conditions” with their parents in their Bench home. Police reports say there was rotten food, feces, and unsafe electrical outlets, among other issues, found throughout the home and this whole thing just makes me extremely sad. How can people be so cruel to children, especially their own, and not have any conscience for it? Granted, I don’t know these people or their backgrounds or if they use drugs/alcohol or any of their other reasons for doing this to their children, but if you’re going to have kids, make sure you can take care of them, otherwise give them up for adoption and don’t make them into the same people that you are as crappy parents! Child abuse is punishable by up to 10 years in prison, but I think this is a ridiculous sentence because it should be a maximum of life in prison for the long-term effects abuse puts on its victims. It forces these children to forever be scarred, granted they can dwell on it or move on, but these emotional and/or physical marks are always there. A child’s innocence is something that can never be retrieved back and that is completely unfair. It’s people like this who should never have children and who create future versions of themselves by the things they do to others.

As it stands now the Spurs and Bulls are the top seed. Both of these teams are big surprises this year. Most fans did not pick either of these teams to be the number one seeds. The 2010-2011 Men's basketball season came to a close Wednesday night in Eugene. The Broncos suffered a season ending loss in the College Basketball Invitational by the hands of the Oregon Ducks. The 79-71 defeat marks the end of the road for seven seniors. The Veteran lead team finished the season with 22 wins and 13 losses. It marks the end of the first season for Head Coach Leon Rice and staff. The Broncos won more postseason games this season than any other in school history. A season that consisted of many peaks and valleys sparked the interest of the Boise community. Students and fans have taken notice of the program's progression. Despite losing seven seniors, next season should be another step in the right direction for Boise State Basketball. A favorable out of conference schedule, Mountain West play, international recruits, and fighting energy will encourage fans to return for what should be another exciting season.

Idaho Statesman: Guns on Campus Bill Dies in Idaho Senate Committee
There is a rather strange bill that came before the Idaho Senate State Affairs Committee this week involving firearms on campus. Sen. Russ Fulcher has been attempting to move the bill along, but the committee voted the bill down today. According to the report, the bill would have stopped college campuses from being able to ban guns from their premises. The bill was passed by the house last month, however now will not be heard again this session. It appears that the Idaho Senate Majority Leader lost a son to a fellow Boise State student with a concealed weapons permit, making it unlikely that this bill will be passed any time in the near future. The latter half of this report consisted of a series of interviews conducted with Idaho Officials from all around the state. One interesting point raised by Sen. Brent Hill of Rexburg feels that lawmakers “‘demonstrate that our lips preach local control, but our hearts are far from it.’” While gun control is a huge issue facing the entire nation, it seems like a step in the wrong direction by allowing firearms on college campuses. The state ultimately acted in favor of more control, but the fact that this bill even made it as far as it did shows a desire for less control.
John Lloyd Idaho Statesman: Boise man who didn’t tell multiple sex partners he had HIV sent to prison for up to 15 years
Michael V. Everhart could spend the next 15 years of his life for passing on the Human Immunodeficiency Virus to over 20 men without proper knowledge to his sexual partners that he had the virus. Since passing the virus to a person is immoral and illegal, Mr. Everhart will most likely not receive parole after his mandatory 2 years of jail time. Everhart seems like a man that lies a lot, a compulsive liar, as he told officials of the court that he was bipolar and heard voices in his head to delay the trial process. He had not gotten a mental health exam and lied to the judge about having being diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Mr. Everhart was advertising himself on Craig’s list as a “disease and drug free sexual partner for males,” which obviously was false. The police caught Michael with records of the people he had unprotected sex with via phone and computer email records. All these people he had sex with: 20 men and 1 woman, were all after October 2009, in which he was diagnosed with the disease. Since the detectives and police men had records of the names of the men and women he had sex with since then, they advised the innocent civilians to get tested for HIV and AIDS. If by some reason these innocent civilians do not have HIV, that would be some kind of miracle. This man is obviously sick-minded and needs to serve this sentence in jail, in all reality, he could be murdering these people slowly and surely.
Lindsey Hileman OMG! Online abbreviations make Oxford dictionary By JILL LAWLESS - Associated Press Idaho Statesman
According to this AP story out of London, the Oxford English Dictionary has added several new words this week that were made popular online. Among them, LOL (laugh out loud); BFF (best friends forever); IMHO (in my humble opinion); and OMG (oh my God). But it’s not as if Oxford just started taking any word, they still have strict standards, but when newly invented words start crossing over into everyday usage then they can make the cut. It wasn’t only these acronyms that were added this week. The verb form of heart—as in “I heart you”—also popularized in recent years by usage on mugs and bumper stickers was also added. As an English major I think I am supposed to be offended by all of this but honestly, I get it. I think that dictionaries exist to chronicle our language and to serve as a tool to discover meanings of words we are not familiar with. In order to fulfill both of these purposes, we have to include any word that is commonly used in everyday language. I know there are people that think that certain words are not deserving of a place among the pages of Oxford, words like “ain’t” or “bootylicious” but the bottom line is that if people are using these words they do deserve a place. For the sake of history and so that when my grandma calls me to ask what in the world “unfriend” means, I can tell her like she told me for all those years: “Look it up.”
Larisa Gavrilyuk Mon 6-9 Transforming Education: Third Idaho reform bill clears big hurdle
Idaho Statesman
After nearly three hours of debate, Idaho Senate voted to pay for Luna’s third Idaho education reform bill. The Senate voted to pay for Luna priorities such as classroom technology, laptops for students and pay-for-performance bonuses by reducing money from the pool used to pay teacher salaries. This bill is calculated to shift more than $57 million from the state money that helps pay teacher salaries and use it to pay for other programs. Gov. Butch Otter has supported the bill from the start. All 20 yes votes came from Republicans. John Goedde, R-Coeur d’Alene, said “We have to do things differently and we don’t have money right now. Our kids cannot wait for us much longer.” He is one of legislative co-sponsors. Because of the economy “We have to adapt. We have to change. Our economy demands it and our students deserve it,” Goedde said. Luna had thanked the Senate and the public for their passionate debate and voiced concerns, also for voting accordingly. The first two parts of Luna’s plan – Senate Bill 1108 and 1110 are already law. They passed earlier this month. The education budge is scheduled to be set next week by the Joint Finance-Appropriations Committee. The budget is likely to be close to appropriation for the current year, which included a $35 million cut in education- the impetus, Luna said, for the reform package. Goedde said “If we only cut more, then hope our students do well, we have failed them.” “Hope is not a strategy.”
Michael Evert is facing up to 15 years in prison for intentionally having sex with up to 20 men while having knowledge of his positive HIV status. He plead guilty in December for knowingly spreading and infection others with HIV.
After two years he serving time he is able to ask for parole. He was sentenced Friday by Judge Pat Owen. Sentencing had been held after Evert reported that is bipolar and hears voices in his head. Evert was summoned to psychiatric evaluations, postponing the sentencing.
Investigation into Evert began in July when he was brought in no a DUI charge and probation violation. While booked in Jail Evert confessed to officers about his deviant sexual acts with 20 men and one women he met online in 2009. Most of which he had unprotected sex with out telling them of his HIV status.
Officers have talked to five victims of Evert and informed them of his status and encouraged them to get tested. None of the known victims agreed to provide victim impact statements or testimonials. Police were able to identify six total victims by phone and online records. More could be identified but the internet privacy hinders officers ability to do so.
In the past 10 years fewer than a dozen arrests have been made of those knowingly spreading HIV.
Idaho Statesman: "Obama to address nation on Monday about Libya"
The article goes into depth describing the situation with Libya and President Obama's plan to address the nation about the matter. Earlier this week, the president committed air forces to the region in alliance with coalition forces and a UN declaration. Still, many Republicans and members of Obama's own party as well still have doubts about the recent venture into a new conflict in the Middle East, especially because the other two engagements in Afghanistan and Iraq are still on going. The president is also planning to put the Libyan conflict in "perspective," said an anonymous White House source. Chiefly among those perspectives is the plan to hand off relatively quickly command of the operation to Nato and Coalition forces. However, it is not clear how that hand off is going to take place or when exactly the transfer will happen. The focus of U.S. forces is mainly going to be on distributing Libyan military transmissions and other communications. While the U.S. and other invading parties have more than enough firepower to route opposition forces quickly, the result would be a U.S. manufactured genocide, with hundreds of thousands left dead under the Made in America banner.
Kyle Blachurst Bronco Elites The Boise State Bronco’s have had a star football program for years. Every year, the Bronco’s send off their greatest players to the NFL. This year, multiple Bronco’s have shown great potential at pro day. Pro day is the day that NFL scouts go to campus to evaluate the draft-eligible players. Titus Young improved his 40 yard dash with times of 4.40 and 4.42 for a combined time of 4.41. With that time, he would have ranked him fourth at the combine. Young ended up missing several events at the combine due to cramps. He ran a 11.08 in the long shuttle which would have ranked him sixth at the combine. Young is predicted as a second or third round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, which is, April 28-30. He also recently signed an endorsement contract with Adidas. An interesting prospect for the draft is going to be Ryan Winterswyk. Winterswyk, a three-time ALL-WAC defensive end could play either side of the ball. At pro day, he worked out as a tight end and an outside linebacker. He caught every pass but one, showing that he has what it takes to play on the offensive side of the ball. During the combine, he ran drills as a defensive end and blocking drills at tight end. The Bronco’s also had prospects at quarterback, running back, and safeties. All of the Bronco’s had exceptional workouts and showed the NFL scouts what they can do. Look forward to seeing your 2010 Bronco athletes playing with the pros.
Improved Pitching Boosts Boise State Softball Team
The Boise State woman’s softball team is well underway in there 2011 softball season, and right now they are looking better than ever. With a current record of 15 wins and 10 losses, this is their best start as a team since beginning the softball program just three years ago. Head coach Erin Thorpe is mostly proud of the consistency of her ball club this year, stating that it is definitely something they have lacked the previous two. Through 25 games this year, the Broncos have gathered 15 wins and 5 losses against unranked teams, but 0 wins and 5 losses against teams currently ranked in the top 25. Pitching for the team is one of the top reasons for the swing in success for the softball team this year. Allie Crump and Aubray Zell have been nationally recognized for their dominant play this season. Crump for striking out 28 batters in just 3 starts while going 20 straight innings without allowing a run, and Zell for topping that by winning 5 straight games and producing 30 straight scoreless innings. Crump contributes her success to her improved ability to work the strike zone, making pitches harder to hit by making them go up and down on different planes. Offensively, the Broncos aren’t doing badly either, producing a .304 hitting average so far with 20 home runs.
Oil prices have hit record highs recently with prices as high as $121 a barrel. Oil workers in the Western Africa country of Gabon are on strike, causing the prices of oil barrels to increase 50 cents or more a barrel. This would not be so significant if the prices were lower than $110 a barrel for the U.S. and $121 a barrel for the U.K.
Production by Libya is completely shut down due to the massive conflict currently occupying the country, and OPEC leaders are waiting until the beginning of June this year to meet about the growing oil crisis. OPEC leaders in Iran currently produce 40% of the entire world’s oil supply. Kuwait leaders believe the oil prices should be lowered to $90--$100 a barrel.

Cycling initiatives in Copenhagen go the distance

ReplyDeletePolice: Boise couple charged with felony injury to child over poor living conditions

NBA PLAYOFFS
The NBA playoffs are 3 weeks away and all the teams eastern and western conference are fighting for playoff position. As it stands now the Spurs and Bulls are the top seed. Both of these teams are big surprises this year. Most fans did not pick either of these teams to be the number one seeds. The Lakers and Heat were projected number one seeds this year by most sports analysts. This is not saying that those teams are not playing well but they were expected to be the top teams. No matter the playoffs this year are going to be one of the toughest in recent years. The match ups are going to be epic. Some examples are the Thunder playing the Nuggets, the Celtics against the Knicks. All of these top teams will be fighting for one prize…the NBA championship. The Lakers are defending their back to back championship and the Celtics are looking for revenge with a game 7 loss last season. The Heat and there big 3 of Wade James and Bosh are looking to claim throne but the Thunder and Boston and Chicago will have so words to say about that. In the end a champion will be crowd and another NBA season will be over. So strap in and ,make your picks now because it is going to be a memorable playoffs.

A favorable out of conference schedule, Mountain West play, international recruits, and fighting energy will encourage fans to return for what should be another exciting season.

msnbc.com, "MLK parade bomb case suspect pleads not guilty" by NICHOLAS K. GERANIOS, The Associated Press
After a long wait, the law enforcement officials in Spokane have found, arrested and charged someone in the terrifying backpack bomb that would have done some serious damage and death to those in the MLK parade if it hadn't been found by a observant man who called the police.
The man, Kevin Harpham, has known white supremicy links and it is theorised that it was these ties that might have been part of the motive of the crime. Harpham was in court on March 23rd and has plead "Not Guilty" to the charges brought against him.

ReplyDeleteIdaho Statesman: Boise man who didn’t tell multiple sex partners he had HIV sent to prison for up to 15 years

ReplyDeleteOMG! Online abbreviations make Oxford dictionary
By JILL LAWLESS - Associated Press
Idaho Statesman

Transforming Education: Third Idaho reform bill clears big hurdle
Goedde said “If we only cut more, then hope our students do well, we have failed them.”
“Hope is not a strategy.”

ReplyDeleteMichael Evert is facing up to 15 years in prison for intentionally having sex with up to 20 men while having knowledge of his positive HIV status.

ReplyDeleteIdaho Statesman: "Obama to address nation on Monday about Libya"

ReplyDeleteBronco Elites
The Boise State Bronco’s have had a star football program for years.
