Details will be forthcoming about the groundbreaking date and location of a new Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints temple planned in Meridian, officials said Sunday. Craig Rasmussen, a spokesman for the church in the Idaho area, said he is “tremendously grateful” that Meridian was selected for the location of the new temple. “For members of the LDS Church, the temple is a central focus of worship, a place of holiness, and peace,” Rasmussen said. “With this exciting announcement, I look forward to the completion of the Meridian, Idaho Temple.” In Idaho, there are about 410,000 members of the LDS Church. The Meridian temple will be the fifth one in Idaho, along with Boise, Twin Falls, Idaho Falls, and Rexburg. Details about the construction of temples are only revealed by the church’s First Presidency, made up of three men viewed to be prophets. The governing body is now made up of Thomas S. Monson, president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and first and second counselors Henry B. Eyring and Dieter F. Uchtdorf.
I found this articleto be quite interesting. It just goes to show you the increasing number of member the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has gained over the years—especially in Idaho. Idaho ranks second in the nation for the number of LDS members per state, behind Utah with over one million members. I am not an LDS member myself, but I find the expansion of the church to be outstanding. People are deciding to engage in the Lord and the LDS faith more than ever, and the construction of the Meridian, Idaho temple proves this.
Racial profiling infringes on Americans' rights The Arbiter - Opinion Lauren Hooker
I completely agree with Eva Hart, the writer of this piece. We call America the Land of the Free, yet we're being completely racist towards people of Middle Eastern descent simply because that is the race of the terrorists on 9/11. Abassi, a Muslim woman, was pulled off of a flight because she was wearing a headscarf, a traditional part of a Muslim woman's outfit.
When did it become okay for us to profile people based on their race? Airport security is high, and when I went on a plane for spring break, they didn't even let me take my chapstick because it didn't fit in my Ziploc. Abassi wasn't even acting suspicious, and she got through security without a hitch. This is not okay. The attacks on 9/11 were devastating and terrible, but this doesn't mean that all Muslims, ten years later, have to suffer for it.
I think that Hart makes a valid point concerning religion: Abassi was pulled off of a plane for wearing a headscarf, which is a part of Muslim tradition. I have a hard time believing that airport security would pull a Christian wearing a cross off the plane, or a Jewish person wearing yamaka out of the airport. It's an issue of respect, something that many Americans seem to be laughing.
Two Boise State gymnasts qualify for NCAA national meet
The Boise State woman’s gymnastics team barely missed out on a chance at competing for a national title, and a chance at making history. The Lady Broncos, who for the first time in regional history posted a score over 196, missed out on one of the top two spots by the smallest margin of just .025. The Broncos put together their best performance of the year in most of the events, and were led by junior Amy Glass and freshman Bekah Gher who both will be heading to the national meet to compete as individuals. To say the meet came down to the wire is an understatement, as the competition and final national spot came down to the very last routine. Amy Glass needed a 9.85 on the balance beam to secure a win for her team, but came up just short in the eyes of the judges. Of the four judges, two of them gave her a 9.8, and the other handed her a 9.85. The high and low are dropped and the average is taken, a 9.25, which left the Broncos .025 short. Although the team came up short, they themselves and their coaches are very highly motivated and are using the shortcoming as fuel. Head coach Neil Resnick encouraged the ladies but left them with something to chew on when he told them, “All summer long when you’re running up and down those stadium steps, just keep thinking of that quarter-tenth.”
“3 sets of human remains found in possible serial killer case”
There have been a total of 8 bodies found near the Gilgo Beach and Long Island area. Three bodies were found on Monday, April 04, 2011. The search for 24-year old Shannon Gilbert has prompted the search when her body went missing in May 2010. She was last seen in this area. They are hoping that Shannon is not one of the bodies. Shannon’s family will have to wait a few days for DNA test results on the remains. All 8 bodies have been found within a close area of one another. They were hidden behind bushes near highways. The characteristics of the bodies found are: they are all women, all involved in prostitution and all around the same age. Most of the girls were advertising sex on the popular sales website, craigslist. The amounts of time the bodies have been decomposing vary. One body has been decomposing for about 2 years. Whoever the killer is, he or she sticks to the same burial sites. The investigation has been ongoing for a few months. The investigation has intensified with Monday’s finding of the three bodies. Authorities are stating that time is of the essence. They want to find who is responsible for these crimes and have justice served. The families of all the confirmed victims have been notified. Women who live in this area have been notified via news reports to be especially cautious with strangers during this time.
Shea McClellin Tue/Thur Nampa police arrest a 13- and 15-year-old boy for breaking into unlocked cars - Idaho Statesman Staff
Recently in Nampa there have been more than 20 break-ins of unlocked cars over the past week. Police have been investigating and they believe the culprits are 13 and 15-year-old boys. Nampa police are not 100 percent sure they are the suspects, but they have a good idea that it was the young boys who chose to break in to the cars. Nampa police were called to Teal Street around midnight on Monday. Citizens were holding the two young boys who were suspected of breaking into the cars around the neighborhood. The Police were not certain if the citizens actually saw the young boys break into the cars or just heard some noise and went outside to see what it was. The citizens did chase after them and catch them around midnight and held them down until police arrived to the scene. The police searched the kids and found many items that did not belong to them and the police determined that those items were taken from the cars.
This story is a pretty well written story. I always enjoy reading stories about dumb criminals and this is just another example. It’s hard to believe that their parents did not raise them to be better trained kids, unless their parents were the same way and always getting in trouble. Parents really need to let their children understand what is the right and wrong thing to do in life or they will end up like this.
April 1st – 3rd kicked off the 8th annual Halo MLG tournament in Dallas, Texas. The three day event included a full team line-up of pro, semi-pro and no-name competitors all battling for a top rank shot at a $20,000 jackpot and a closer step to be crowned the overall champions of the Halo MLG tournament. Status Quo were crowned the MLG Dallas 2011 Halo: Reach Champions today as they won their rematch against THO Impact with a 3-0 sweep in the Championship Finals. The competition got hot as the two top bracket teams went head to head in a “best of 5” game match up. Game one of the Championship Match (which was actually game six between the two squads) was Capture the Flag on Zealot. Impact jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead as they seemed to be riding leftover momentum from their win over “Believe the Hype” in the loser’s bracket. The early lead was very surprising and somewhat expected but Status Quo quickly tied it back up and then took the lead for themselves with three un-answered back to back flag captures in a row. Impact fought back to keep it close but the captain of Status Quo, Flamesword, finished the game with a clutch double kill on the final capture, ensuring a victory for status quo . All four members of Status Quo had positive K/D ratios and it was clear why they were one of the top seeded teams entering this tournament. The second game was a simple slayer match on Nexus and both teams played very reserved which led to a 5 minute standoff between the two. Once again Status Quo proved victorious all thanks to “Neighbor’s” incredible sniping abilities. The third game of the Championship Match was Assault on Asylum (which is a Sanctuary remake from Halo 2). Status Quo didn’t slow down from the previous games and quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead with the first bomb plant of the game. SQ began to dominate Impact as they added an insurance marker to increase their lead 2-0 and took over Impact’s base. “Enable” even began to teabag a few dead bodies as ultimate humiliation to send a clear message to all the other teams spectating. The next MLG tournament is set for Columbus on April 15th-18th. http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/711390/halo-reach-pros-to-watch-at-mlg-dallas/
Tennessee Sewage Plant Spill: 2 Workers Missing After Millions Of Gallons Of Wastewater Spill From Gatlinburg Plant Katie
Two workers are missing today after a wastewater treatment plant in tourist town failed and spilled millions of gallons of sewage water. The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency said the holding tank gave way early this morning and possibly sent millions of gallons of water in to the Little Pigeon River. The little Pigeon River connects two of the biggest tourist cities in the Smokey mountain National Park area. A City manager from Pigeon Forge said they are helping to look for the two missing men. The cause of the failure hasn't yet been determined, state officials said. The Mountain Press newspaper in Sevierville reported there was a mudslide or rock slide in the area after heavy rains. The paper reported the breach was accompanied by what sounded like an explosion and that water began rushing out. Local area citizens are being warned not to come in contact with the river until more is known about the spill. City officials say the water needs to be tested to determine what was spilled and how to best clean it up. Officials from Knoxville Tennessee about thirty five miles north of the accident were on their way to investigate the accident. It is estimated that between one and half to three million gallons of water was spilled.
Shantel Darrah Arbiter Online- “How this whole crazy funding thing works: Part 3”
This article is a continuation of past articles that have been discussing how the government funding is being distributed among schools in Idaho. Boise State receives $2,422 per student while the University of Idaho receives $3,593 per student, more than a thousand dollars more. This much of a different in funding effects everyone in regards to tuition prices, parking permits, vending machine prices… etc. In this current article it discusses how the State Board of Education is aware of the problem and that they are currently discussing solutions. One of the solutions that is in discussion by Sue Chew is the possibility of a temporary $.01 tax increase. Another solution is to reallocate the funding so that all the schools would receive that same amount since three other schools besides Boise State are also being affected. With both solutions in mind, I think both combined would be a good idea. 1 cent is not a lot from one person, but from everyone combined it would help out a lot. Also reallocating the funds shouldn’t be a question at this point if it is such an obvious problem that the University of Idaho is receiving most of the state funding. What is the reasoning behind the unequal funding? Boise State produces more revenues for the state through the football program than any of the other schools so it should only make more sense that the school producing the most should receive a little bit more attention. Especially when it helps out the economy in an overall sense, not just the university.
Kristine D /Mon R&NW-News Review April 6th, 2011 If you have ever bought into the conspiracy theory that "it’s the Pharmaceutical companies making us sick so we’ll keep using their products". Some news today lends credence to that theory. Today $6 million dollars in medical supplies sold over the counters in drugstores were seized by federal officials. These contaminated drug products are blamed for many infections and even death. They include povidone iodine and benzalkonium chloride antiseptic products, cough and cold medicines, nasal sprays, suppositories, medicated wipes, and antifungal creams. Dara Corrigan, FDA commissioner for regulatory affairs said they had taken the action to stop Triad Pharmaceuticals from distributing products that were a risk to public health. The firms continued failure to comply with good manufacturing practices after three FDA inspections and several recalls of products forced the seizure. The products are in quarantine with the investigation continues. A two year old toddler from Hustion died from an infection caused by Bacillus cerus the parents claim was transmitted by tainted wipes. They are suing H&P Industries Inc. and Triad Group who are owned an doperated by the Haertle family of Wisconsin. The products have been distributed by Walgreens, Walmart and are widely used in hospitals and clinics. If you have used alcohol wipes or antibacterial products of any kind go the web and check out the recall list a msnbc to see if you have products in your home that need to be disposed of. Big business is not looking out for you. You have to look your for yourself.
As Ethics Charges Fly, Wind Farm Sitting Bill Still Dies
On Wednesdays lawmakers killed a bill that would have put strict new prohibitions on where new wind turbines can be built. They wouldn’t be allowed to be built within two miles of any residence without the owner’s permission, and counties wouldn’t be able to put them places where their blades would cast a shadow on private property or roadways. The law was killed in an 11-8 vote. Afterward, Janice McGeachan, a republican from Idaho Falls accused two members of the house of “ethical lapses” in judgment. McGeachin said that she knew of two members that hadn’t disclosed their personal financial ties to wind projects. According to Idaho law, public officials are forbidden from taking official action or making a formal decision or formal recommendation concerning any matter where they have a conflict of interest and haven't yet disclosed it. McGeachin said she wasn’t going to name the people, and that she had been “soul searching” and finally decided that it was her duty to say something. I think that this was a really interesting article because I can see both sides of the argument, but at the end of the day I think that the bill should have passed. Wind turbines are already very prevalent throughout all of Idaho, and more and more and going to be put up every year. Controlling where they are allowed to be put will help make everyone happy and make sure that they are not a nuisance.
Lindsey Hileman Idaho effort to allow ads on school buses fails IdahoStatesman.com Today the Idaho House of Representatives voted out the bill that proposed advertisements on school buses as a means of generating money for the school districts. The bill was voted against 30-39. Of course there were limitations set on the proposed ads, no alcohol or tobacco products, and nothing political or sexual. But the hope was to sell these ad spaces to companies whose products and advertisements fell within these boundaries in order to bring revenue into the struggling school districts. The schools that we hear about every day, that have to cut programs and fire teachers. The reason cited by opponents of the bill was that the proposed ads would be too distracting to other drivers. Really? I guess we better take down all the billboards and bus benches and remove the ads from Valley Ride buses. While we’re at it we should probably have every business that is visible from a public road, take down their signs; apparently the drivers in Idaho are very easily distracted. I’m usually not this opinionated but I am amazed at the absurdity of this decision. When I first heard about this bill I thought it was genius and I figured with all the financial difficulties that our schools are facing, that this bill would be a no-brainer. The Representative from Lava Hot Springs said the reason he voted against the bill was that the school bus was a symbol that was better left alone. You know what else is a symbol better left alone? Schools…with teachers in them, and text books and desks and librarians and other things that cost money; money that could have come from advertisers.
Writer Mistaken for Meth Dealer Finds Himself the Story BY: NADINE RUSSELL Salt Lake Tribune
Jay Patrick would have had the perfect story of a man booked in jail for two days for being mistaken for a meth dealer in the case of fishing without a license. The story remains true, Jay Patrick was booked and spent two days in Cache County jail last week for being incorrectly charged as one of Nevada’s top ten fugitives. “I was pretty scared,” Patrick said Wednesday. “You hear of people put on death row who didn’t do it, so I’m thinking it’s feasible I could go to prison for this.” Patrick, 36 would have probably spent more time in the jail if it hadn’t been for his employer, The Herald Journal, in Logan, Utah where Patrick was a reporter from July 2009 to September 2010. His attorney was able to find work documents saying he was not in Mesquite, Nev. when he was accused of selling math. The more interesting question would be how Jay Patrick’s name wound up in the police database in the first place but phone calls to the police department were not returned. Patrick was incarcerated on March 30th when he was in the District Court of Logan, Utah. Earlier, Patrick as cited for a misdemeanor in court for fishing without a license. He missed his court date and there had been a warrant for his arrest but it could be settled with a $220 bill so Patrick assumed there would be no problem. The bailiff took Patrick to the jail for quick processing but when an officer checked the police database he found other information that wasn’t anticipated and eventually led to his arrest. “After 20 minutes or so, the officer comes in and says, ‘You are wanted in Nevada for meth trafficking, and, in fact, Mr. Patrick, you are on the top 10 most-wanted list.’”
msnbc.com "Gunman kills at least 11 children at Brazil school" by msnbc.com staff and news service reports
As of this moment, this story is breaking news. According to reports, Wellington Menezes de Oliveira, a 23 year old former student of the public elementary school in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in questioned entered the school and began shooting. The current death toll stands at 11 children dead and 18 hospitallized. According to reports the death toll would have been a lot higher if it had not been for a hero police officer, who has yet to be identified. The whole country of Brazil is deep shock and morning for the ten girls (ages 12 to 14) and one boy killed. Even President Dilma Rousseff of Brazil wept and called for a moment of silence to remember the innocent victims. According to reports the gunman committed suicied after being shot in the leg by the hero police officer, and he had a suicide note that detailed his actions. The only thing about the note that has been released at this time is that the gunman had refered to having contracted AIDS. One can imagine that there will be more information released in the future.
SENDAI, Japan - Late Thursday night Japan had another big aftershock, rafting nerves it knocked out power for the northern part of the country and tsunami warning were sent out, but later canceled. The quake was measured at 7.4 magnitude but later downgraded to 7.1. Which is still the largest aftershock since March 11. From the original 9.0 earthquake and tsunami. Both left around 25,000 people killed and caused a nuclear crisis last month. No major injuries were reported. The aftershock was strong enough to know items off shelf in stores and move a large automated teller machine. Within an hour of Thursday’s aftershock people started buying water and instant noodles. Items that were in short supply after the bigger quake. Officials say that the aftershock hit 25 miles under the water and off the coast of Miyagi prefecture. Buildings as far away as Tokyo were affected and shook for about a minute, which were about 205 miles away from the epicenter. It also knocked out two of three power lines at the Onagawa nuclear power plant north of Sendai, which has been shut down since Tsunami. The plant was running on the reaming line and generators kicked in also. Prime Minister Naoto Kan met with staff members shortly afterward. Also a separate emergency government team met in response shorty after the aftershock to monitor any reports of damage and urged firefighters, police and other emergency personnel to aid those in need.
Aaron Nelson 3/31/2011 Week 11 post ESPN.COM ‘THE FINAL FOUR”
Its final four time and all are excited for it. This year’s last 4 teams are not the typical picks of the fans. There is no number one or number two seeds in the final four this year. This has not happened since 1996. All four teams have a total of 37 loses and that’s the most since 1976. Butler and VCU are the Cinderella teams of the tournament, they were not picked to go very far, but they have surprised everyone. The other side of the four is Kentucky and Connecticut which are very successful programs and are the favorites to win it all. In the end the finals will result in a power house teams versus an up and coming team. It has been a great tournament this year with a lot of upsets and great buzzer beaters. If you are not a basketball fan you should still watch the final four, it is a exciting as it gets for sports. Anything can happen in these games and you don’t want to miss the potential of one of the greatest games or upsets in college basketball history. In the end the men’s championship game was one of the lowest scoring games in history. Butler and UCONN made it a good game in the end UCONN was victorious. Butler shot a championship low 18.1% from the field and only scored 41 points which was about 21 points below their average. In the end it was a good game and a great tournament.
Joe Ross T/Th Eagles Check out Bama QB and Kansas State RB Philly.com
In anticipation of the 2011 NFL Draft the Eagles worked out 2010 National Champion Quarterback Greg McElroy and 2010 Big 12 Offensive player of the year runningback Daniel Thomas. With the uncertainty of the 2011 season because of the player lockout, the NFL Draft is still an important deal for franchises, fans, and players. Scouts and fans have speculated that the Eagles biggest draft need is at the Cornerback position. The Eagles recently worked out Texas corner Curtis Brown. The fact that the Eagles brought in Greg McElroy in for a workout lead many to believe that Kevin Kolb will be traded, as the Eagles currently have 3 quarterbacks. Also the Eagles bringing in runningback Daniel Thomas confirms the focus of the Eagles to bring a solid 2nd string runningback to run behind LeSean "Shady" McCoy. With the uncertainty of the season still in mind, the draft should be a good time to bring back positive attention to the NFL.
Idaho Statement: Ready, set, remote: Boise State football's TV picture clears up
By: Kelly Sweeney
The Broncos football team has been awarded a program high of 10 games out of 12 regular season games on TV. Three of these games will be played on ESPN, three on Verses and Three on CBS Sports Network. The remaining one will be lying on the Mountain West Station. Coach Pete is very excited and happy about the amount of games on these networks because he said that his boys have come to play every time a game has been on a big station. He feels that this has definitely worked to the Broncos benefit because the players are able to have a good showing on TV as well as the program gets more and more fans. The other thing that the Broncos are facing is the game time changes as well as the days. The games will be played on Saturdays at 1 in the afternoon. Coach Pete says that he has gotten so used to the Bronco Nation fans being excited at nighttime, and he is hoping that they will be ready just as they are at 7pm. The Broncos players have yet to talk to the media about how they feel about the change, but Coach Pete assumes that they are very excited about the exposure opportunity that has been giving to them. The Broncos are very excited about the change of conference as well as the game time change. They will play their first game in the Georgia Dome in September.
Also in this article, he talked about the upcoming concerts in the Boise area for the summer and he was very informative in doing so. I found out that Amos Lee is coming to the Eagle River Pavilion on August 10 and just for this tidbit of information I am glad I read this article.
Rebecca Black, who is famous now for her (I hate to say it) catchy yet incredibly ridiculous song “Friday”, is also talked about in this. Deeds states that all you need nowadays is have Internet access and a little serendipity in order to get discovered. He also adds that you need appealing music and lyrics, which adds a nice sarcastic touch. For anyone who hasn’t heard this song yet, it is probably one of the worst things I have ever heard. The lyrics are completely obvious and elementary, not to mention the fact that a 14-year-old is talking about partying, and it’s simply ridiculous. But, she has gotten over 80 million hits on YouTube as of last week, so her wish for being discovered has come true, even if they are because the song/video is so awful.
Jacy Skeen Tu/Th This comes from a German newspaper, Deutsche Welle Cycling initiatives in Copenhagen go the distance With Copenhagen being deemed the bicycling capital of the world, 37 percent of the population there uses a bike to get to work or school. And they are hoping to have 50 percent on the pedals by 2015. However with all of those bikes, there are problems or congestion and spots to park them. To give you a perspective on the amount of bikes, the busiest bicycling street in the world, Norrebrogade in Copenhagen, ushers through 37,000 cyclists per day! The article talks about the innovations that Mike Harris has come up with. The biggest being the “Cycle Super Highways”, implemented by 18 municipalities surrounding the capital. These highways are bike tracks that run parallel to automobile highways; they have bridges to go over roads and the harbor, but the main idea is to encourage travelers to pedal the extra distance. They have the most direct routes with no detours, and there are also service stations with air pumps and other tools available. At one point in the article it talks about how the idea of installing fast and slow traffic lanes within the cycle path is up for debate. Mike Harris goes on to say “The beautiful thing about bicycling is that people negotiate a common space with eye contact and body language.” Another way that Copenhagen is benefiting from the popularity of biking is they have found a way, at the green-friendly hotel Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers, where the guests are welcomed to produce electricity through ordinary bikes connected to small generators and batteries. That electricity is then used to “fuel” computers, televisions, light bulbs, or fed directly into the grid of the hotel.
Idaho Statesman: "Otter signs final education reform bill"
Tu/Thu
Buzz still circles Boise because of the public school reforms put forth by school chief Tom Luna. Two part of the bill have already been signed into action and it appears that just today Gov. Butch Otter has signed the third and final part of the bill. The purpose of the bill is to redirect funds strongly in the direction of new technologies within the classroom. The money will be pulled from teacher salaries, and will mark the implementation of a “pay-for-performance” scheme for teachers. Incentives such as tenure furthermore will no longer maintain the meaning or security that they once did. The article ends with the governor’s wife telling the public to see the bill for its good parts and to simply stomach those parts you disagree with.
This article seemed most closely relatable to class because it is along the same lines as our investigative story. It seems now that computers are set to nudge teachers out of their jobs because computers are now receiving more money and attention than those actually employed by local schools. In terms of the article itself, the length was rather short however it still conveyed what exactly is happening today in plenty of detail. This bill has raised a huge number of concerns with parents and citizens in general, and it seems as though this third addition discredits all of those concerns. Finally, the addition of the quote by Gov. Otter’s wife seems a little like a cheap shot because it provides no comfort for those with real concerns for the future of public education.
U.S. President Barack Obama has begun his campaign for re-election in order to hold in place the changes he has made and strived for since his first election.
"Between now and the November 2012 election, the incumbent Democrat will work to convince a fickle America that Obama has delivered change, made the right moves and earned the chance to continue the job. He will have to defend policies that have proven divisive, chief among them his sweeping health care overhaul and his efforts to boost the slow-to-rebound economy"(Shanghaidaily.com)
In a recent email sent out to millions of his supporters announcing his candidacy, Obama stated, "We've always known that lasting change wouldn't come quickly or easily. It never does." He also told his supporters that he and him campaign are fighting and will continue to fight for change and progress, but beginning to mobilize for re-election is important although it may seem much more in advance then necessary. To ensure his seriousness and commitment he continued to tell supporters he is filing the paperwork with the Federal Election Commission. He also has created a new election campaign website where a video with testimonials and Democratic supporters is shown.
An important aspect to Obama's re-election will be to persuade liberals to have an open mind about his policies. His first election brought forth many doubts and pessimists towards his campaign, which are exactly the people he hopes to bring to his side in his re-election campaign.
The 33-24 vote now lies in the hands of Governor Jan Brewer, who has never refrained from signing measures that ease gun restrictions since her term in office. According to Republican Representative Eddie Farnsworth, this bill will likely lead to a dispute between a person carrying a gun and a university official, which will then be resolved by a judge. Farnsworth says because people are willing to break the law, he doesn’t see how the change will make campuses any less safe. Many other Republicans believe the measure goes too far, while they still support the right to The vague language is what’s most intriguing about the bill. Farnsworth said that those who criticize the unclarity of the law should’ve offered amendments to the bill. I had to force myself to laugh to keep from crying while reading this article. It’s unbelievable how representatives and lawmakers are passing such a vague law and leaving its clarity to the hands of a court judge. Democrat Ruben Gallego also made a good point when stating that this law would keep university officials from preventing a problem, by making it impossible for that official to question anyone carrying a gun on campus.
Idaho Statesman: "Idaho Rep. Hagedorn detains drunken intruder at gunpoint"
The article from the Statesman details the events that surrounded and intruder into Idaho State Representative Marv Hagedorn's home in Meridian. The intruder was Nicholas Kuklish, a 21-year-old man who was severely intoxicated during the home-invasion and apparently thought the Legislator's home was his own. Kuklish's blood-alcohol content was three times the legal limit for getting behind the wheel of an automobile.
The Statesman informs the reader that Kuklish broke into to the home about about 3:20 A.M., where Hagedorn's wife, Patty, came to him concerned that a noise she heard was an intruder. Hagedorn then proceeded to confront Kuklish with his semi-automatic pistol that housed a 13-round clip.
When the Representative discovered Kuklish, the Statesman says, he was attempting to break through the door-locks.
During all this, however, Hagedorn was apparently unaware that Kuklish was drunk.
Not being the first time Hagedorn was the victim of an intruder, once during his tenure in the Navy he found he home had been robbed, he took the opportunity to repeat the need for citizens to be armed for the reason that police authorities can't always be at the scene in a timely manner. "The best cops in the world were still four minutes away and it's your personal responsibility for minutes one through three," he said.
John Lloyd Tiger Woods at the Master’s Tiger is having an amazing weekend in Augusta, Georgia. He is 3 shots behind the leader, Rory McIlroy, a 21 year old, Irish man, and is playing his best golf since his apparent mishap and revelation of his life. Tiger has overcome so much in so little time, his sex scandal, his wife leaving, not having his kids, and his golf game has been hurting since the accident. Tiger is in contention to dominate the weekend on the toughest golf course in all of the United States. Tiger shot a 66 on Friday and a 71 on Thursday. If he can keep his pace up, he can definitely see himself wearing that green jacket. Tiger hasn’t won a major since 2008 and he is the best thing that’s ever happened to the sport of golf. Tiger has raised salaries and brought promotion to the sport like no one else in the history of golf. Not even Arnold Palmer or Jack Nicklaus has had the impact of Tiger Woods’ golf game. To say that Tiger is important to the game of golf is an understatement. As a 35 year old this year, he is 2nd behind only Jack Nicklaus in wins at any sort of majors. Nicklaus got his last major at 45, if Tiger keeps his pace, he is on track to destroy that record that Nicklaus set in his last major appearance.
A proposal to allow guns on campus has been passed by the senate. No, not in Idaho, but in Arizona. SB 1467 was passed by the senate on Thursday, allowing guns to be carried through University and Community- College campuses. This law prohibits school officials to endorse any rule or regulation on anyone carrying a weapon in a “public right of way”, a phrase not defined in the legislation. Democrat Ruben Gallego also made a good point when stating that this law would keep university officials from preventing a problem, by making it impossible for that official to question anyone carrying a gun on campus.

Meridian LDS Site Attracts Attention
Racial profiling infringes on Americans' rights

Nampa police arrest a 13- and 15-year-old boy for breaking into unlocked cars
- Idaho Statesman Staff

Halo Reach MLG wrap up
April 1st – 3rd kicked off the 8th annual Halo MLG tournament in Dallas, Texas.

Tennessee Sewage Plant Spill: 2 Workers Missing After Millions Of Gallons Of Wastewater Spill From Gatlinburg Plant
ReplyDeleteKatie

ReplyDeleteArbiter Online- “How this whole crazy funding thing works: Part 3”

If you have ever bought into the conspiracy theory that "it’s the Pharmaceutical companies making us sick so we’ll keep using their products".

ReplyDeleteAs Ethics Charges Fly, Wind Farm Sitting Bill Still Dies

ReplyDeleteIdaho effort to allow ads on school buses fails
IdahoStatesman.com
Today the Idaho House of Representatives voted out the bill that proposed advertisements on school buses as a means of generating money for the school districts.
Writer Mistaken for Meth Dealer Finds Himself the Story
ReplyDeleteBY: NADINE RUSSELL
Salt Lake Tribune
Jay Patrick would have had the perfect story of a man booked in jail for two days for being mistaken for a meth dealer in the case of fishing without a license.
The story remains true, Jay Patrick was booked and spent two days in Cache County jail last week for being incorrectly charged as one of Nevada’s top ten fugitives.
“I was pretty scared,” Patrick said Wednesday. “You hear of people put on death row who didn’t do it, so I’m thinking it’s feasible I could go to prison for this.”
Patrick, 36 would have probably spent more time in the jail if it hadn’t been for his employer, The Herald Journal, in Logan, Utah where Patrick was a reporter from July 2009 to September 2010.

Another strong quake rattles tsunami-ravaged Japan
http://www.idahostatesman.com/2011/04/07/1596081/japan-races-to-find-tsunami-dead.html
07 April 2011

‘THE FINAL FOUR”

Deeds: Hyde Park’s strip club; Rebecca Black’s genius
In this article, Deeds talks about the April Fool’s joke which SunRay CafĂ© owner, Dave Martin, played on his customers and fellow North Enders. He posted a flyer on the restaurant’s reader board that was titled “Torch 3 – Coming Soon.” While some customers laughed at the joke, others were not too happy, the owner explained. Deeds did a really good job in this article and gave the piece a conversational feel which made for an easy read. He had a lot of good, powerful quotes which he worked in nicely.

Cycling initiatives in Copenhagen go the distance
With Copenhagen being deemed the bicycling capital of the world, 37 percent of the population there uses a bike to get to work or school.
Mike Harris goes on to say “The beautiful thing about bicycling is that people negotiate a common space with eye contact and body language.”
Another way that Copenhagen is benefiting from the popularity of biking is they have found a way, at the green-friendly hotel Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers, where the guests are welcomed to produce electricity through ordinary bikes connected to small generators and batteries. That electricity is then used to “fuel” computers, televisions, light bulbs, or fed directly into the grid of the hotel.

ReplyDeleteIdaho Statesman: "Otter signs final education reform bill"

Obama’s re-election bid begins

ReplyDeleteThe 33-24 vote now lies in the hands of Governor Jan Brewer, who has never refrained from signing measures that ease gun restrictions since her term in office.
According to Republican Representative Eddie Farnsworth, this bill will likely lead to a dispute between a person carrying a gun and a university official, which will then be resolved by a judge.
Farnsworth says because people are willing to break the law, he doesn’t see how the change will make campuses any less safe.
Many other Republicans believe the measure goes too far, while they still support the right to
The vague language is what’s most intriguing about the bill.

ReplyDeleteTiger Woods at the Master’s
Tiger is having an amazing weekend in Augusta, Georgia.

ReplyDeleteA proposal to allow guns on campus has been passed by the senate.
Many other Republicans believe the measure goes too far, while they still support the right to
The vague language is what’s most intriguing about the bill.
